What you’ll need

  • DK (double knitting AKA light worsted weight) yarn. I used Deramores Studio DK in mist (a lovely silvery grey), topaz (duck egg blue), blue velvet (a soft navy) and Sky (light blue) as the main colours with Frost (white) and citrine (yellow) for the flower centres.
  • Crochet hook a little smaller than the one you would normally use with DK yarn. I used a 3.75mm Clover Soft Touch hook.
  • Scissors
  • Blunt ended darning needle

How is this different from the small Crafternoon Treats flower?

You can see one of the original small Crafternoon Treats flowers below left. It has just three rounds with two colours separated by white. For the large flower I first made a variation with a popcorn stitch in the third round. This is in the middle of the photo. To this I added a layer of petals as a fourth round, similar to those on the outside of the original small flower.

For this bunting I used a yellow and white centre and two complimentary colours from my scheme for the third and fourth rounds.

Stitches and abbreviations

  • Chains (ch), slip stitch (sl-st), double crochet (dc), half treble (htr), treble (tr), half double treble (hdtr) [UK terms]

To convert to US terms:

  • Chain = chain
  • Slip stitch = slip stitch
  • Double crochet – single crochet (sc)
  • Half treble = half double crochet (hdc)
  • Treble = double crochet (dc)
  • Half double treble = half treble (htr)

UK terms are used throughout but a US terms version of the printable pattern is available.

Let’s get started!

Round 1

Make 4 chains. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Make two chains.

Then start making trebles into the ring. Make 11 trebles in total.

Do not join with a slip stitch. Instead, close using the neat join technique:

  • Cut the yarn and pull through the last treble stitch.

  • Thread onto your needle and sew from front to back through both loops of the top of the first treble.

  • Bring your needle to the front of the work and then sew through between the front and back loop of the 11th treble. You should see a figure of 8 as your closing yarn tightens.
  • Pull to close and adjust tension before sewing in the tail end.

Round 2

Once you have sewn in your second tail end you will have a small, neat disc for the centre of your flower.

Start round 2 by making a treble standing stitch into one of the spaces between the treble stitches.

This short video is useful here:

Hold your white yarn behind your work, just to the left of the first space.

Yarn around your hook twice then insert your hook into a space between two of the trebles of round 1.

Yarn over and pull the yarn through so that you have three loops on your hook. Then, yarn around the hook again and pull through two loops.

Yarn around your hook again and pull through the last two loops on your hook. Your standing treble stitch is complete. Try not to make it too tight. When you keep it quite relaxed it will be exactly the same height and shape as the other trebles in this round, giving a very neat professional finish to your work.

Make a treble stitch into the same space so that you have a pair of trebles.

You then make a pair of trebles into each space all the way round your central yellow disc. You will end up with 12 white petals, each made up of two trebles.

Do not join with a slip stitch – use the neat joining technique again. Cut your yarn and pull the tail end through the final treble. Thread onto your darning needle and sew through from front to back through the two top loops of your first standing treble stitch.

Then bring the needle to the front of your work and sew through, again from front to back, through between the front and back loop of the final treble. Pull to close. Weave in your tail ends neatly.

Round 3

This round consists of popcorn stitch petals.

Using one of your main colours, make a treble standing stitch into one of the spaces between the pairs of white trebles of round 2. Then make three ordinary trebles into the same space.

You will now make a popcorn stitch.

  • Pull up the loop slightly and remove your hook.
  • Insert your hook through the top two loops of your standing treble and then through the loop of the fourth treble. The Crafternoon Treats large flower free tutorial step 9 crafternoontreats.com
  • Yarn around hook and then pull yarn through the extended loop and through both loops of your standing treble. This completes the popcorn stitch.

Make two chains.

Then make four trebles and repeat the step above to make another popcorn stitch.

Make two chains and repeat into each of the 12 spaces around your circle so that you have 12 popcorn stitch flower petals, each separated by two chains.

After the final popcorn stitch, make two chains and join to the first petal with a slip stitch to close. Weave in your tail ends neatly.

Look at the flower – you are now going to work round four into the chain spaces between the popcorn stitches.

Round 4

Choose another of your main colours – I used topaz here. Pull through a loop of new yarn and then make a chain to join. This counts as a double crochet.

Then make a petal by working a half treble, a treble, a half double treble, a treble, a half treble and a double crochet into the same space.

For the next petal make a double crochet, a half treble, a treble, a half double treble, a treble, a half treble and a double crochet into the same space.

Repeat all the way around to make 12 outer petals. Close with a slip stitch and weave in your ends.
