Granny square day 2020

This year has seen the cancellation of so many events, craft related and generally. But granny square day on Instagram went ahead as it has for the last few years, brining together a virtual community in celebration of crochet creativity.

Started originally by Susan Regalia (@suregal on Instagram) in 2014, the event became so popular in 2018 that Susan passed the coordination of the day over the Simply Crochet magazine and they have made sure the event has run smoothly ever since.

Anyone can join in – all you have to do is make a granny square, 4-5 rounds, in any design you like and take a pic to upload onto your Instagram feed. This year I chose a traditional granny that I was making for a project and made it in some of my favourite colours of Stylecraft Special DK.

From the centre, the rounds are made with: Raspberry, Mocha, Mushroom ad Lime. Sounds good enough to eat – but maybe not all at the same time…

One of the ideas behind Granny Square Day is that each photo of a granny square is taken as the first pic above, with the square photographed from above and then cropped to fill the square screen of an instagram post.

That makes it easy to make a grid of your favourites and combine them to make a virtual granny square blanket.

Among the favourites of favourites is the cat square, the goldfish, the bee and the granny squares with a granny’s face.

After Granny Square Day I carried on being a bit obsessed with making squares and with trying to use up some of my stash. So I built on the initial rounds and carried on until I had a square that was 20 rounds and 15 inches square. I’m going to make more and then decide what to do with them but I like the idea of some sort of lap blanket in these lovely muted colours.

I’m also making use of some Harmony Squares designed by Lucy of Attic24 which I made years ago, probably very soon after they came out. I do have a plan for these and I will share them very soon xxx
