Crochet poncho pattern alert! Hello again – I’m back and the Stylecraft Blog Tour 2017 is visiting me today. The project that I’ve done with the gorgeous Stylecraft Batik and Batik elements yarn is one that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. This crochet poncho pattern has been quite an adventure for me to put together but making it is really relaxing and easy.

If you take a look at my post from yesterday with some background to the blog tour, you will see the four different colour packs that 16 of the Stylecraft blogstars were given to make a new project. Here is a quick recap: from Lagoon (top left), Desert (top right), Rainforest (bottom left) and Country garden (bottom right).
You can see what the other blogstars used their packs for on the lovely blog posts that have been popping up over the last 2 weeks. These have been the projects and blogs on the tour so far:
- Emma Varnam who made a gorgeous Maple Shrug
- Justina AKA Polly Plum of the blog Every Trick on the Hook who made a mesmerising corner to corner moss stitch blanket
- Michelle and Anne of Crochet between worlds who made their jewelled pebbles blanket
- Sandra of Cherry Heart who made her fabulous Sophie wrap with the Desert colour pack
- Sarah from Annaboos House who made a stunning Learn to Knit shawl
- Lucia of Lucia’s Fig Tree who designed the Spanish Moss Scarf
- Zelna AKA Zooty Owl who designed a bag AND scarf with her pack
- Lucy of Attic24, who made a lovely flower cushion
- Phil of The Twisted Yarn whose pattern for a colourful knitted cushion is just beautiful
- Julia of Hand Knitted Things who made a knitted ripply wrap and coordinating fingerless mitts
- Catherine of the blog Catherine’s Crochet Corner who put together a wonderful ripply lap blanket
- Angela of the blog Get Knotted Yarn Craft who designed an interlocking squares baby blanket
Helen Kurtz of the blog The Knitting Exploits of Josie KittenΒ whose post on the blog tour was yesterday. Tomorrow its the turn of Heather of The Patchwork Heart, so make sure you check out what she’s made. The blog tour ends on Monday with a visit to Jane Crowfoot – can’t wait to see what she’s done with her pack.
I chose the Desert colourway, which features four balls of the Stylecraft Batik elements in the colourway iron. Hence the name, the Desert Irony Poncho! Sorry, the best I could come up with due to not being in top form at the mo!
While I’ve had the trapped nerve in my neck (no worries, I’m not going on about that again!), I’ve had time to really concentrate on getting the pattern done, and its a biggie. Its on Ravelry as a paid download as it contains 4 complete step-by-step tutorials on how to do the techniques required. Click on any of the Ravelry buttons in this blog to see more info about the pattern and take advantage of the introductory discount.

The Desert Irony crochet poncho pattern
I set out to design a simple, non-fussy and wearable poncho. Working out the maths is a bit tricky, but that’s all done for you. I’ve also done a lot of sampling, swatching and trouble shooting so that the finished pattern fits snugly around the neck but isn’t difficult to get on. And it has a very nice drape, making an attractive and cosy cover-up for cool autumn and spring days.
Starting off is the most difficult, as it is with all crochet projects. But once you get going, this is a TV crochet project, it glides off the hook and allows you to dream and think your own thoughts. A perfect crochet meditation. And you have something retro, warm and snuggly to wear at the end.
Details about the Desert Irony Crochet Poncho pattern
It includes:
- Details about yarn, size, gauge etc.
- A written pattern in UK and US crochet terms. You can print the written pattern in whichever crochet terminology your prefer – in only 2 pages of A4.
- The colour order to make the poncho in the same yarn and colourway that I used.
- Four complete step-by-step phototutorials to show you how to:
- Work a chainless foundation round for maximum flexibility for the poncho neck
- How to work the set up neck rounds so that there is no difficult counting to do.
- Detailed instructions on how to work the pattern (its easy, but handy to see exactly what to do).
- Work an optional roll neck to finish off the poncho and make you extra warm and toasty.
But, less waffle and more photos. My Β lovely and long-suffering friend Carole very kindly let me know a ‘photoshoot’ of her wearing the poncho in her gorgeous retro home. There are a few photos of me too, but I’m nowhere near as slim and elegant (the poncho still looks good though!).
I hope you’ve enjoyed the blog tour and that you like the Desert Irony Crochet poncho pattern. If you fancy making it in a different colourway, I’ve added in a table below to show the colours I would suggest from the other packs.
Remember that you need the Batik pack (as currently sold as Desert, Rainforest, Lagoon and Country garden PLUS a ball each of silver and cream to finish the poncho.
And I’ve labelled them all with a letter, so you can devise your own colourways. I’ve added in the metres and yards of yarn of each that you will need so that you can calculate how many balls you need of any yarn you fancy.
xxx See you soon xxx Kathryn
