The Crafternoon Treats flower for Yarndale

Crafternoon Treats flower for Yarndale 2015

When I started my blog last year I realised I needed a small image to put onto Facebook and Instagram and didn’t want a pic of myself! I’d been making a flower garland so just took a quick snap that I’ve used ever since. Time for a revamp!

I’ve also been wanting to try out a video tutorial and even though I need to improve a great deal, I was pleased to have been able to produce one to go with the detailed photo tutorial on how to make the flower.

I’ve posted a few pics of the flowers on Facebook and Instagram and thought of using the flowers to send my contribution to this year’s Yarndale project. But I wasn’t sure if they were ‘flowery’ enough. Imagine my surprise when earlier today Yarndale and Lucy of Attic24 shared the link to my tutorial, commenting that this was an ideal flower for Yarndale project this year. Woo hoo…

A few people on Facebook have been asking how to fix the flowers together. The project for Yarndale needs a small flower grouping about 10cm across that fits into the palm of your hand and with a safety pin attached if possible. Like this!

So here is a quick tutorial on how to do this soooooo easily. You need to make just four of the flowers using the online tutorial.

Then simply sew three of the flowers together from the back and sew the fourth flower on top to make everything look neat from both sides.

Here is a little step-by-step showing how I did it. I chose a green yarn so that you can see it easily but you can use any colour as the sewing is invisible from the front and back when you are finished.

  • Fasten in the end by oversewing a few times.
  • Then sewing only into the back of the stitches in the petals, work between one petal on the first flower flower and one petal on the second flower.

  • Make about 6 stitches backwards and forwards, being careful not to pull too tight to distort the shape of either flower.
  • Then bring in the third flower and attach via one of its petals in the same way.

The flowers are now attached but a bit floppy so we need the fourth flower for support.

  • Bring in the fourth flower and attach it right side up with its centre over where you have just stitched the three other flowers together.
  • Insert your needle into the back of the stitches of both the three flowers you have joined and the fourth flower, working between them.
  • Move around the fourth flower, joining with stitches all the way round.

Because you are working in the back of the crochet stitches, none of your sewn stitches will show on the right side of the flowers.

You will end up with a small flower corsage that looks neat from the front and the back, and that is more secure. Just add a safety pin and you are ready to send off to the Yarndale project.
