Want to crochet Christmas decorations?

Star motif and crochet Christmas decorations featured

November is racing onwards and Christmas is just around the corner. I know many of you will have been getting on with Christmas gifts for a while now, crocheting until smoke comes off your hook. Crocheted Christmas decorations are also really popular so I thought it would be useful to have a little look at some of the fab patterns for stars, baubles and garlands that you can use.

Starting off with some basics, a blog post I did for Craftsy on How to crochet a simple star motif is now live. Stars are perfect and you can make them in sparkly yarn, brightly coloured cotton or anything you have to hand. I loved making these little stars and trying out the new cotton yarn by Three Bears Yarn. This new manufacturer has just launched its range of 100% cotton in three weights – 4ply, DK and aran. I got a ball of each to try and the colours are luscious. All three weights made well defined stars that can be stiffened for hanging using spray starch or using a coating of pva glue, which dries clear.

Three Bears Yarn has also supplied the crisp white cotton for the snowflake kit that is currently available free (£1 postage) via Love Crochet so that you can make snowflakes using the easy pattern by Sarah Jayne of Bella Coco. Kirsty Allsopp is spearheading a Handmade Christmas Fair in Manchester next weekend and the kit and snowflakes are part of a charity appeal to help Home Start, a charity in the UK that helps families in need.

The Bella Coco YouTube channel has loads of really excellent tutorial videos on crochet and here she is teaching Kirsty how to make one of the snowflakes.

The pattern is also available to download in a print-off format. Get the snowflake pattern here. Or watch Sarah Jayne’s detailed video tutorial here.

As well as being a great way to help the Home Start charity and families in need this Christmas, the free pattern can be used with any colour cotton to make stunning crochet Christmas decorations for the tree, or to string together in garlands.

Three Bears Yarn competition news

After trying out the Three Bears Yarn, the company approached me to see if I wanted to run a competition in my Facebook groups Bagalong with Crafternoon Treats and The Crafternooners. Definitely, I said, so its all happening the weekend of the 21st/22nd November. There will be a blog post on Friday 20th November explaining what will happen and another when the competition link goes live. The prize is a pack of 12 balls of 100% cotton yarn in the weight of your choice and then in any of 16 colours. To be able to win you have to be a member of one of the Facebook groups above – so come and join us. The groups are very friendly and we give each other loads of inspiration 🙂
